5 Facts About Cigarettes You Probably Didn’t Know

We’ve all heard that cigarettes are dangerous. We’ve also heard that quitting them is difficult. We know that they contain tobacco, and that nicotine is the substance that makes them addictive.

But did you know that these are only the most basic facts surrounding these small, tobacco-filled products?

Here are 5 facts about cigarettes that most people probably don’t know. Some of these might be more surprising than others – but the fact that they’re all real should be enough to raise some eyebrows in surprise!

Cigarettes are the most traded product on the planet

The cigarette industry is a global, $400 billion dollar industry in which 1 trillion cigarettes are sold from country to country every year. Also, despite the fact that smokers are actually smoking less, the major tobacco companies are still making big money selling to other countries.

Big tobacco companies in the US, for example, earn more revenue each year selling to different countries than they do to citizens within the states.

Nicotine from tobacco reaches the brain within 10 seconds

Everyone knows that tobacco is addictive – but many people fail to understand exactly how effective it is. With the way modern-day cigarettes are produced and designed, nicotine reaches the brain in less than 10 seconds – which is actually incredibly fast!

This makes them more addictive than ever – which is dangerous, especially for teenagers!

Smoking just one cigarette cuts an average of 11 minutes off of your lifespan

This might seem far-fetched – but that’s the number that researchers have come up with. According to information published in the British Medical Journal, that’s the estimated difference that cigarettes seem to make when you compare the life expectancy of a smoker to that of a non-smoker.

These researchers also concluded that smokers were likely to die about 6 and a half years earlier than non-smokers, on average.

A lot of cancer could be prevented by avoiding tobacco

Here’s what the World Health Organization had to say about tobacco on their official website.

“More than 30% of cancer could be prevented, mainly by not using tobacco, having a healthy diet, being physically active and moderating the use of alcohol.”

Yes, it might be true that some types of cancers aren’t caused by tobacco use – but there are a lot that could be prevented if people stopped using it. As it turns out, living a simply healthy lifestyle can do a lot of good – and part of that means forgoing the use of tobacco.

People used to think that tobacco was good for you

Back in ancient America and sixteenth century Europe, it was believed that tobacco smoke could cure illnesses and drive out evil spirits. It was also thought to cure syphilis, relieve headaches, and rid the body of infections.

In India, it was once believed that tobacco was good for the teeth, which led to the creation of tobacco toothpaste.

In conclusion

Smoking has been around for a long time, and people haven’t always understood how dangerous it really is. Now, thankfully, people have a better understanding of it, which allows them to make better choices regarding tobacco use and smoking.

Of course, E-cigs could serve as a safer alternative. They still deliver nicotine – but do so without many of the chemicals that you get when you smoke a cigarette. E-cigs are also cheaper, and don’t give you bad breath or gum disease.

Information! If you currently smoke, then you should seriously consider giving up the habit and switching over to E-cigs. You’ll look better, feel better, and end up healthier as a result. You really can’t go wrong.
