Do Trends Say That Vaping Has Taken A Dive?

Everyone knows that vaping has really exploded into a major movement over the course of the last few years. It went from being a mostly ‘underground’ habit to a mainstream pastime that most people have at least heard of.

Back in 2014, there were nearly 600 vaping shops open in the UK – which was an increase of about 50% from the previous year. The UK E-cig trade was, at that time, worth about £90m per year – which is a pretty staggering figure when you take into account how ‘unknown’ E-cigs were just a short few years ago. (source:

Approximately 2.1 million people were using E-cigs in the UK back in 2014. That was up from just 700,000 in 2012 – which indicates pretty explosive growth by anyone’s standards.

But is it possible that E-cigs have hit a decline in 2015? Some seem to say yes, and claim that they have statistics to prove it- though through closer inspection the figures may tell a different story.

 Recent Statistics on Vaping

According to figures collected by a study called the Smoking Toolkit (backed by the Department of Health), it appears that E-cig use may either be flattening out or even waning altogether. At the end of 2013, approximately 22% of smokers and ex-smokers were vaping. But during the final quarter of 2014, this number dropped to around 19% – which might not seem like much, though the drop has been called ‘statistically significant’ by a UCL Department of Epidemiology and Public Health Professor named Robert West.

According to an article published by The Guardian (you can find the article here:, West was quoted as saying that the “Numbers who use them (E-cigs) while continuing to smoke are going down.” Of course, smokers are a very important group among vapers, accounting for nearly seven out of ten E-cig users. In fact, only about 1% of the non-smoking population has ever tried an E-cig.

But do these statistics show a sign of trouble for the E-cig industry?

 Are E-cigs Becoming Less Popular?

Despite the fact that statistics seem to show a fall in usage among vapers, there definitely doesn’t seem to be enough evidence to support the fact that they’re going to drastically decrease in popularity. If anything, E-cig use is ‘leveling off’ from the explosive growth that it experienced in 2013 and 2014 – though this doesn’t come as any real surprise.

When an industry grows this quickly, there will always come a time when a sort of natural ‘balance’ is reached – after which the market will tend to grow and/or decline at a more natural pace.

From the sound of it, vaping is here to stay for quite some time. It might take them awhile to earn the trust of those who are still uncertain about the risks, and it might take even longer still for them to replace their analog counterparts – but my guess is that they’re already well on their way to doing both of these things.

Electronic cigarettes are simply the next technological step for the human consumption of nicotine. Of course, they can also be something else -they can be a fun habit to enjoy without the use of nicotine, but it’s probably safe to say that most people use them so that they can get the nicotine they crave without having to put themselves at risk over the use of analog tobacco cigarettes.

Are we going to stop building jet engines and go back to propellers? Are microwave sales going to disappear because the ‘fad’ of being able to warm your food by exciting the molecules has leveled off over time since they were first released to the public?

It’s definitely safe to say that E-cigs are superior to their analog counterparts in every way – and despite the fact that some people have their qualms about them, I don’t really see any possibility of them leaving the scene any time soon.
