Does Nicotine Keep You Awake?

If you’ve ever vaped, or have ever read any of the online forums about it, then you’ve probably come across complaints about E-cigs ‘keeping vapers awake’ until the small hours of the morning. There are a ton of these stories online, and I’ve also known several people who have experienced this same phenomenon in their own lives. As it turns out, a lot of people claim that vaping keeps them awake – so what’s the problem? Why is it doing this, and how can you fix it if you’re experiencing it as well?

Is it possible that nicotine is to blame?

In this blog post, we’re going to talk about this issue, discover if nicotine is to blame for the problem, and discuss possible solutions.

So, first things first – let’s talk about nicotine.

Does Nicotine Keep You Awake?

As it turns out, nicotine is likely the culprit in this circumstance. According to a few different and trusted courses, nicotine is a stimulant that can certainly keep you awake. In fact, it’s recommended that you avoid cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and pipes before going to sleep – so it only makes sense that vaping would also fall into this category.

Wikipedia describes stimulants as follows…

“Stimulants (also referred to as psychostimulants) are psychoactive drugs that induce temporary improvements in either mental or physical functions or both. Examples of these kinds of effects may include enhanced alertness, wakefulness, and locomotion, among others. Due to their rendering a characteristic “up” feeling, stimulants are also occasionally referred to as “uppers”.”

With nicotine being what Wikipedia describes as a ‘notable stimulant’, there’s little wonder as to why it might serve to keep people awake. It basically stimulates the mind to make it more alert – which obviously isn’t conducive to relaxation or sleepiness.

So what can be done to help solve the problem? How can you keep nicotine from keeping you awake when the time comes to actually go to sleep?

How to avoid losing sleep due to nicotine

As it turns out, there are a few different things that you can do to help yourself in this situation.

1.) You can switch to a lower dosage of nicotine

Switching to an E-liquid with a lower nicotine concentration can sometimes solve this problem by keeping the levels of nicotine within your body at a lower level. This might not always get rid of the problem, because any nicotine within your system could potentially keep you awake – but trying to vape an e-liquid with less nicotine right before bed instead of your full-strength liquid could do a lot to help keep this problem at bay.

2.) Avoid vaping three hours before you plan to go to sleep

Setting your vape pen aside as bedtime approaches may do a lot to help ward off this problem for good. After about 3 hours, most of the effects of nicotine use should be diminished enough to allow you to sleep unhindered.

3.) Vape nicotine-free e-liquid instead

You might want to consider switching to a nicotine-free e-liquid in the hours leading up to bedtime, as this may do a lot to help negate the problem. This will still allow you to vape, but won’t deliver fresh nicotine to your brain to ‘stimulate’ you or make you more alert. As a result, you can still enjoy the functions of the habit without the chemical affects – which might be a good thing if you’re a creature of habit and enjoy a good vape right before going to sleep

In conclusion

In conclusion, it’s important to understand that nicotine can certainly keep you awake – but that doesn’t mean that it always will. I’ve known a lot of vapers who vape before bedtime without a problem – but I also know people who really struggle with this issue.

For best results, find a way to diminish the problem. Your quality of sleep is very important – but you also don’t have to sacrifice your vaping habit for it either.

Vaping a nicotine free e-liquid before bed might be the best way to overcome this problem if you really love to vape. This seems to work pretty well for most people, so consider giving it a try if nicotine is really getting in the way of your sleep schedule.
