Should You Be Concerned If Your Teen Starts Vaping?

If you’re a parent, odds are good that you’ve had to deal with your share of issues regarding your child – especially if your child is a teen. Growing up definitely isn’t easy nowadays, and as a parent you no-doubt feel that keeping your teen safe, healthy, and secure is a number-one priority.

But what should you do if you find out that your teen has been vaping? Is it something to be concerned about? Should you try to make them stop? Is it bad for them?

These are all very good questions – and past a certain point, there’s really nobody who is going to be able to answer them but you. This article definitely won’t be able to tell you exactly how to deal with your teen regarding this issue – but it might help to give you a basis to work from as you formulate your own game-plan.

 Comparing E-cigs to Cigarettes

Let’s take just a moment to remember that we are talking about teenagers here. Teens have been pushing the limits since the beginning of time. This developmental leap between childhood and adulthood can be very challenging – both for the teen and for their parents. Some teens play it safe during their younger years, while others might feel the need to experiment. Some do drugs, some start smoking, some try drinking – the list goes on and on.

But where do E-cigs fit into this discussion?

 Keeping things in perspective

First of all, it’s important to remember that basically everyone agrees that E-cigs are less harmful than tobacco cigarettes.

Would you be upset if your child was smoking cigarettes? How would you handle that situation?

If you can answer these questions, then you will have come a long way toward reaching a conclusion about E-cigs. On one hand, you might not want your teen getting addicted to a substance like nicotine – but on the other, it could really be much worse. Cigarettes are worse – and some might consider alcohol consumption to be worse as well.

This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be concerned if your child comes home from school with a vape pen – but it might help you to reclaim your focus and to think about things in a logical manner. In all honesty, your teen might feel that he or she is being responsible by vaping instead of smoking – and in a sense, this is correct.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that vaping is good for teens. Most companies won’t sell E-cig products to individuals under the age of 18, and for good reason. Nicotine is an addictive substance, and it can also be toxic in large-enough doses.

One thing that is a little bit concerning about E-cigs is that they usually come with bottles of E-liquid. This liquid could deliver very harmful doses of nicotine if it were ingested or mishandled – and that in itself is a viable danger. If your teen isn’t careful, they could expose themselves to too much.

Do what you think is right for your teen

While catching your teen vaping probably isn’t something to panic about (let’s not forget that vaping is a much safer habit than even smoking – and unfortunately, a lot of teens decide to smoke at some point or another), it’s something that you do need to deal with. Teens can definitely benefit from being nicotine-free, and having you involved in the process might be the best chance they’ll have at quitting vaping and/or smoking altogether.

If your child is vaping because they’re trying to give up cigarettes, then you can probably feel positive about the fact that you’re headed in the right direction—though in the end, it’s probably safer for your teen to wait until he or she is an adult to make a permanent or semi-permanent choice about vaping. Try to communicate the fact that you care about their safety and well-being, and offer them incentives to quit consuming nicotine altogether.

Most of all, remember to be supportive and to remember that kicking nicotine in any form is going to be difficult. Your teen is going to need your help and support. Let them know that you’re proud of them when they succeed in skipping a vape or a cigarette, and try not to be too hard on them when they mess up.
