SMOK Alien 220W Box Mod Review
Our favourite feature was the firing button and we loved the feel of the mod, as well as the display in general.
Yes, you read the title right. This is a 220W Box Mod, built by SMOK, one of our favourite E-cig manufacturers… and we actually got the opportunity to test it! It has a ton of awesome features, including temperature control, power mode, pass through charging, etc. Pretty much everything you would expect from a world-class box mod.
The first word that we thought of to describe our initial reaction to the device was ‘awesome!’
We tested the box mod with our Arymi Gille 0.5 Ohm Tank, and also with the SMOK TF RTA G4 Quad-Deck Tank. For this latter tank, we built the coils ourselves… and it clocks out at just about 0.2 Ohms. So these were the two tanks that we decided to use to try out this amazing, powerful new box mod device!
So, with that said, let’s get started.
Pros and Cons
- Out-of-this-world power
- The menu works very well
- We loved the size and shape of the mod
- The firing button was awesome
- Mind-blowing depth to settings and control over your vape
- We wish it had a more ‘basic’ mode for people who are less experienced
- The ‘plus and minus’ buttons feel like they are in the wrong place because them ‘minus’ button is higher on the device
- This isn’t really a downside, but you will need to make sure that you have a tank and batteries for it… as the mod by itself does not come with them unless you buy it in some type of kit
What’s in the starter kit?
First, let’s talk about the packaging. As usual, with SMOK, the packaging was awesome. It came in a quality box with high-quality graphics on the front. We loved how it all looked.
The device itself looks awesome. But then again, SMOK always does an awesome job making their devices look good. As for what you actually get in the starter kit, you get…
- The Mod Itself
- A USB/Micro USB Lead
- The Instructions
- A Screen Protector, cut to the perfect size
- An Authenticity Certificate
- Instructions For How To Install The Screen Protector
First, let’s talk about the instruction book. The instructions were laid out very nicely. We certainly didn’t see any kind of a problem with this, and it did a good job of showing us how to use it.
As for the device itself, it felt quite light right from the start. Keep in mind that this device does not ship with a tank or batteries… so you are going to need some 18650 batteries and a tank to get it powered up and going.
(It weighs about 240 grams in total with the batteries in)
So, despite its light initial weight, it is actually quite hefty once it is all put together.
The battery case is located on the bottom of the device. The lid just flips up. The connections are clearly labeled, and this makes installing the batteries pretty easy.
One thing that we really liked about this mod was the firing button. It was not a small button, actually. It was large enough to take up almost one entire side of the product, so all you really have to do is ‘squeeze’ to activate it. And we loved this.
The display is pretty nice. Setting it all up is a tiny bit complicated, but once you get the hang of it, it’s not too bad. You can alter pretty much everything… wattage, the low-medium-high settings, several different modes, including watt mode, temperature control mode, and others.
One small criticism that we might have is that it might almost be too complex. It would be nice if it had some kind of a ‘basic mode,’ for people who don’t want to have to mess with soooo many settings that they may not understand. But… this is not a deal breaker. Just a thought.
There is a truly amazing amount of control available over the settings in this device. If you are an advanced vapor who wants a device that will give you unparalleled control over your vape, then this product is absolutely going to impress you… without a doubt.
The on-board charging does a really good job of charging the batteries evenly… though we also believe that, for 18650s like you would be using with this device, removing them and putting them into an external charger is better. But still, on the go, the on-board micro USB charger works really well.
- 6 to 220W power output
- Temperature Control Mode
- Extra-large OLED screen
- It has an ergonomic firing button
- The battery access door is easy to find and utilize
What Did We Think Of SMOK Alien 220W Box Mod?
Our first vape test was with our 0.5 Ohm tank. We tested it in wattage mode, because we do not usually use TC mode… and it was set to 44 watts. We filled our tank full of high VG juice, and gave it a try.
The results? We loved it. We got plenty of clouds, but we still wanted to see what it could do when cranked up to 50 watts. We cranked it up and hit it… and it was SO nice! The clouds and the flavour were awesome at 50 watts. It was smooth, the juice tasted amazing… it was outstanding!
Next, we put on the 0.2 Ohm SMOK 4 deck rebuildable G4. We started out at 50 watts, just to see how it would perform at that level… and it did pretty good. We got much better clouds with this one, obviously… but we wanted to see what this tank would do at 65 watts.
We hit it pretty hard at this wattage… and all we could say was ‘wow.’
This was almost too much. At this wattage, the tank and the vapour were both getting pretty warm… though the mod itself remained stone-cold. It didn’t even act like it was being taxed.
Next, we turned it up to 75 watts.
At this wattage, we got an unbelievable amount of vapour. It was amazing. This was even warmer than the last hit, but it was still manageable.
We hit it one more time, at 80 watts. We didn’t want to take it past that with this coil… but let’s just say that the mod really worked, even at this higher wattage.
To be really honest, we were just straight-up impressed. The Alien absolutely blew our minds… completely. If you want a serious, amazing vaping mod, then this is an option that you MUST at least look at before making a purchase.
Appearance and Feel
Appearance-wise, you can get this mod in a huge range of different colors. Ours was black with the blue trim, and we loved it! Weight-wise, once you put the batteries in and the tank on it, it is actually quite hefty and chunky. It feels rather large in-hand, but we liked this as well.
It feels like a serious device for serious vapers, and we were pretty into it.
The tanks that we used with this device, coupled with how the device was designed, gave us impeccable airflow. The tank has more to do with this than the mod, but yeah… we had no problems with that.
Steel and plastic seemed to be the primary materials used to build this mod. It felt sturdy and strong. We loved it.
- Ease of Use
On one hand, this device was a bit tricky to use because of its complexity. But on the other hand, the menu was pretty easy to navigate. We rather liked it. It is a bit advanced… but they did it in a very user-friendly way.
This mod is just awesome… all the way around. But our favourite feature was probably the firing button. We loved it. We also loved the display and the feel of the mod. But yeah. The firing button was our favourite new innovation.
To be really honest, the biggest drawback, for us, was the up and down buttons. We felt like the ‘up’ button should have been positioned above the ‘down’ button… but they were reversed, which was a little bit confusing.

If you are going to be ordering this mod, then you are going to need at least two high quality 18650 batteries to go with it. You can find some awesome batteries on vapour.uk, but make sure to order pairs of the same battery for the mod.
